What is Projection Mapping and How can it Enhance My Event?

The New Cool Thing in Events and Wedding Receptions is Projection Mapping.

If you’ve ever been to a Disney Park, you may already have seen Projection mapping and not even known it.  It’s the effect where they project images on the castles during fireworks displays. It is a powerful visual as it has the capacity to entirely change how the castle appears.

If you haven’t seen Disney’s Castle Projection Mapping, check out this video:

To get technical, Projection mapping, sometimes called video mapping or spatial augmented reality, is a display technique that can be used to turn stationary objects, like buildings, walls, cakes, or just about any immobile surface… regardless of shape, into a display surface for video projection.

These objects can be complex landscapes, like buildings, smaller indoor objects or even theater stages. By using a specialized software, the user can take any two- or three- dimensional object, map its surface, and create a virtual program which mimics the object being projected on.

The software interacts with a projector to fit a desired image onto the surface of that object. The technique used by artists, DJs, entertainers, and advertisers adds an additional flair through optical illusions, and can create the visual illusion of movement onto stationary objects.

Here’s a Great Example of Projection Mapping on a Wedding Cake:

In simpler terms, Projection Mapping uses regular video projectors, but rather than projecting on a flat screen, we can map the projection to any surface. Basically, we turn common objects of any 3D shape into interactive displays. Even more simply put, projection mapping is “the projection of an image on a non-flat surface”.

We here at Special Effects DJz use the effect in combination with music to enhance the atmosphere of an event. It creates a larger sensory experience, brings an event to life, and makes for some amazing moments that are memorable for years to come.
